Week one on a GLP-1 has a specific shape: you're on the starting dose (the labels all begin with a deliberately low on-ramp), appetite suppression is usually mild-to-moderate, and the habits you set now are the ones that will carry you through the deeper suppression of later dose steps. This plan optimizes for exactly that — installing the protein-first pattern while it's still easy.

The target for the template below: ~90-100 g protein/day across 3-4 small meals. Your personal number may differ — run the protein calculator — but the structure transfers to any target.

The daily template

MealTemplateProtein (USDA-based)
BreakfastNonfat Greek yogurt cup (170 g) + berries + 1 egg~23 g
LunchHalf-cup cottage cheese + fruit, or tuna (3 oz) on crackers~14-20 g
AfternoonString cheese + small handful of nuts, or a protein shake~7-24 g
DinnerPalm-size chicken/salmon/tofu + vegetables + small starch~25-31 g

Totals land between 85 and 105 g depending on swaps. Every meal leads with the protein item — eat it first, and let fullness cut off whatever's left after.

The seven days

The week is the template with rotation, because week one is not the time for recipe adventures:

  • Days 1-2 (normal appetite days): the template as written. Batch-cook chicken and a pot of rice on day 1; dinner becomes assembly, not cooking.
  • Days 3-4: swap dinner protein (salmon or lean ground turkey), swap lunch between the cottage-cheese and tuna versions. Notice which meals you're finishing — that's data.
  • Day 5 (first queasy-day rehearsal, if needed): broth + crackers + banana + a cold protein shake sipped slowly. See the nausea guide for the full playbook. If you feel fine, this is just a lighter template day.
  • Days 6-7: repeat the pattern that worked best. Write down (seriously, write down) your three most reliable meals — those are your defaults for the escalation weeks.

Week-one rules that earn their keep

  1. Protein first at every meal. The single highest-value habit on these medications.
  2. Small plates, real portions. Serving the old portion and abandoning it trains frustration; serve the half-portion and finishing it trains success.
  3. Fluids between meals, not with them, if you find fullness arriving mid-meal — liquid volume competes with food on a shrunken stomach capacity.
  4. Slow down. Fullness signals arrive stronger and faster; outrunning them is how week-one discomfort happens. Ten extra minutes per meal is cheap insurance.
  5. Don't chase perfect. A 70 g day in week one is fine. The pattern is the goal; the precision comes later.

When cooking isn't happening

Outsourcing some meals is a legitimate strategy, not a failure: rotisserie chicken, 20 g+ frozen meals, and portioned meal delivery all fit the smaller-appetite pattern. Factor runs a dedicated GLP-1 Balance menu sized for exactly this use case.

After week one

Dose escalation typically continues for months (the schedules are on our label reference pages, sourced to the FDA documents), and appetite suppression usually deepens with it. The template scales down gracefully: keep the protein items, shrink the sides, add the fourth smaller meal if three big ones stop fitting. When progress eventually stalls — it does for everyone — the plateau checklist is the next read.

Frequently asked questions

What should I eat the first week on a GLP-1?

Three to four small meals, each led by 20-30 g of protein, with fluids between meals rather than during them if fullness comes fast. Week one is usually the lowest dose, so appetite may only dip mildly — use the week to install the protein-first habit before suppression deepens with later dose steps.

How many calories should I eat on a GLP-1?

The medication typically creates the deficit for you by shrinking appetite — most people don't need to force a calorie target in week one. The more useful early metric is protein: hitting your 1.2-1.6 g/kg adjusted-weight target while eating to comfortable fullness. Calorie math becomes relevant later, at plateaus and maintenance.

What if I can't finish the meals?

Normal, and the plan is built for it: every meal leads with protein so that whatever gets left behind is the rice, not the chicken. Halve portions rather than skipping meals — four half-meals beat two abandoned ones for hitting protein.
